I want to make my own lye

I don't own a wood burning stove so I would have to do a firepit outside.could I use that? And how would I collect the ashes? Put something underneath to collect them? And if so...what?

  • What will you be using it for? If it's for soap, lye from ashes is really more complicated that it seems lol

  • yes it would be for soap. Is it really that much more difficult? I watched some youtube and saw that rain water/coldwater needs to be added and constantly tested (like the egg test).....?

  • It's pretty complicated. I tried it and it was way more trouble than it was worth. I was able to get lye at the hardware store and that made my life a lot easier

  • Only "lye" I know of around here is the commercial stuff (it's not 100% lye but I just don't trust it.
