Dingy laundry

It seems my laundry skills are lacking big time even though I've been doing it for 30 years. My kids socks are dingy and gross looking, most whites don't look white, and my colors don't seem to stay there vibrant color for long. I do have hard water, but I always buy a high quality detergent, and I use bleach on my whites.
So moms criticize away tell me what I'm doing wrong!!

  • Also could I be using to much soap,or not enough? I use half a capful to save money. Sometimes I use a full cap if the laundry is bad.
I use cold water on everything accept bedding.

  • I make my own detergent
It costs me $50 a YEAR
it works better than commercial detergent
Sounds like you are using too little detergent, and washing in cold may not be getting the clothes fully clean

  • Vinegar works well, so does peroxide. I use the tide pods and they work great on whites. I don't trust myself to make homemade detergent, I would be afraid it would ruin my washer...
