how can i make elemental formula taste better?

he is 2 months old; had open-heart surgery at 1wk, 2nd surg. between 4-6 months. Feeding tube but trying to get more eaten by mouth- about 1/3 now. Needs to gain weight for next sugery. Nutramigen taste aweful- if tasted better might eat more readily. Any suggestions? Dr.s seem to think babies have no taste buds.

  • You must follow your doctor's lead on this as your child has significant health issues. It would be potentially dangerous for me to make any suggestions. How much are you pushing with his tube?

  • We give 70mls q4 hours, but he is 8.6lbs and was born at 7.10lbs 2 months ago. He is doing well but doesn't take to his formula- sucks a binky very well. The formula tastes like bile- I tried it. We keep close contact with his docs, but when he was having severe colic with the formula they sent him home on- regular milk based- the nurse practitioner suggested we give him a dose of his oxycontin! I was the one who switched to an elemental formula which worked so they were fine with it. His face is raw from tape to keep tube in place and his hand are alwys mittoned so he doesn't pull out. i want more palatable taste so he can gain and be tube free.

  • Poor baby :(

I'd like to suggest that you look into Neocate. See if you can get a sample to determine if he likes that better. Please PLEASE check with your doctor first to make sure that is okay

  • Also ask your doctor about donor breastmilk, which will taste better and be better for him.You may even be able to relocate.
