Odd cat behavior

so i have two cats. their food, water, and litterbox are on a screened in porch and a few weeks ago i started opening the back door so they could go outside and check out the grass if they wanted to. it started slow, they'd step on the grass and haul butt back inside, then progressed to the point where they'd want to be out there all day. their claws are intact, btw. well about 2 weeks ago, one of them was gone for almost a week. i truly thought he'd run away, and then one night at 10 or so pm he just showed up at the front door lol! he was fine, a little thin but that's it. after that i stopped letting them go outside, but they'd find ways to sneak past us when we were going out there to play outside. a few days go by, and he disappears again for a few days and same thing, shows back up at the front door. he has not left the house again, but now he won't come out of my room. i know for a fact he has not come out of there all day, not to eat, go to the bathroom (and he hasnt done that anywhere upstairs either) he just wants to sleep all day. he seems fine, he's responsive when you pet him and all. maybe he got used to going a few days without food? if he doesn't come running tomorrow morning when we fill up the food bowls, im going to have to make him come out i guess. he's about 2 years old and neutered, if that makes a difference. and we also got a new pup that he's not fond of, but i dont think that he'd starve himself to stay away from the dog.

  • You may want to take him to the vet to get checked out if he is still off tomorrow. Cats hide when they are under distress.

  • If he doesn't eat or drink, I'd run him to the vet to get to the bottom of it and the vet can also hydrate him.

  • yeah im thinking i might need to take him in if he's still acting weird tomorrow. thing is, he isn't really hiding, just wanting to stay upstairs. he slept with my 6 year old all night last night which i thought was weird then already, usually he doesnt like to be trapped in her room. after i checked on her i purposely left the door cracked knowing he'd want to come out sooner or later, oddly enough he stayed in there all night, and never came down for breakfast. eventually he ended up back in my room.

  • Are you sure he isn't eating and drinking at night while you are sleeping?

If he isn't then I would as you said. Put him somewhere(bathroom perhaps) where you can track if he is eating or drinking. If he isn't then take him in.

  • It could be when he was out he got hurt or scarred .If he doesn't get moving around tomorrow id  call the vet and see what they think. Cats are strange in generally.

  • Kitty probably didn't sleep for a long time while he was adventuring. Catching up on some zzzzzzs

  • I wonder if he could have gotten worms or something while he was out. Sometimes worms will make a cat go off its food.

  • here's an update:

i was so worried last night i didnt want to wait til morning, so i went upstairs and had to drag him out from under my bed. he was awake but he didn't fuss in the slightest, no resistance or even complaints. then he just laid there until i picked him up. brought him downstairs to the food and he went right to it, but was walking slow. i figured it was because he'd been resting all day. this morning, he was still walking slow, and is now laying down on the carpet on the patio. he just doesnt seem right. like he has zero energy. he'll look at you when you call him but he won't respond in any other way, he used to jump up, meow and come rub on your leg. very strange...
