What does it mean to get thinned out?

My cousin is past 9 months and her water has not broken and her contractions keep coming and then stopping and she is suppose to go in on sunday and get thinned out and learn more of what the doctor needs to do.

  • They are going to thin out her cervix. This way the baby can start the journey down the birth canal. It's what effacement is.

  • Cervix is like a fat little donut. Dilated means opened, as of the donut hole gets bigger. Thinning or effacing would be like flattening the donut with a rolling pin.
