Sister is having a tough time with her 4 month old.

She says that she doesn't sleep for long at a time and cries a lot...and not just a cry, a scream where sometimes she holds her breath. She says she has tried everything she can think of to get this baby to sleep. She doesn't even like being in her carseat...cries there just as much. And she is on reflux meds.

Any suggestions?

  • Maybe she's not on the right reflux medicine or the right formula for her condition. It's definitely worth checking with the doctor again.

  • I agree with Ballad. Either the meds aren't the right ones and/or there is some other issue. Both of my boys had both moderate-severe reflux and had dairy intolerances (which they out grew.) Some reflux meds (zantac) are extremely weight sensitive, so if baby is growing then the dose may need to be adjusted, sometimes frequently.

  • Doctor. Might be colic or the formula she's been feeding her. Could be a lot of things. If baby could talk I'm sure she'd tell her, but all baby can do is cry and hope someone can figure it out. Doctor's appointment.... soon.

  • She is exclusively breastfeeding. She did up the meds once when her weight gained. Her doc only gave her the meds b/c at her last appt baby Layla screamed the whole time they were there. Not sure if this is a colicky baby or not. I would think maybe another doctors visit and some tests of some kind, but I do not know what.

Perhaps she should stop dairy if she wants to keep bfing?

  • Back to the doctor she goes. Maybe a sling or swaddle the baby. Not sure how much she actually holds the baby.

  • My kids screamed like that & became rigid from gas pains. I used Mylicon gas drops, made sure not to put the baby flat for at least 1/2 an hour after feeding, Burped & burped & burped them & even made my DH carry them around for a while to get some farts & burps out too before bed time. That worked for me & they were fine.
