Can you substitute peanut butter with apple butter in a PB&J sandwich??

I picked up a jar of apple butter but have no clue what to do with it... I was thinking since my son can't bring peanut butter to school that I could substitute the peanut butter with apple butter- will that work or taste good at all??? I never know what I can send because tree nuts are also not allowed....

Any other SIMPLE ideas of what this stuff is for and if it is any good???

  • I use Apple Butter more like Jelly rather than how you would use other nut butters. I usually do Peanut Butter and Apple Butter.

  • Apple butter, while delicious, is a little too runny to be used like peanut butter. It's a better substitute for a jelly, like cassie said.

  • If you want a peanut butter substitute, check your grocery store organics section for sunflower butter (might just be labelled sun butter). Apple butter is basically apple jam.

  • Apple butter is pretty much equal to jelly. It would make a good sandwich on its own, but not as a substitute.

    It's yummy mixed into oatmeal.

  • Apple butter is like jam in flavor and baby apples in consistence.

    Thick, non clear jellyish.

    It is not a substitute.
It would be like putting two jellies on a sandwich, nothing wrong with it but not the same as a nut butter.
