Picking till he bleeds HELP!

My 10 year old ASD son has started picking at his toes. He has picked 2 toenails OFF!! Now he is picking the nail bed and making them bleed as well.

Any advice?????

  • Have you tried social stories? Making it a 'rule' that you have to keep socks on unless you are taking a bath?

  • We've talked about what can happen. Infections, stuff like that. He won't keep anything on his feet. That is a year round battle. Now
    he won't even let me touch his feet to put Neosporin or a band-aid on.

  • Have you mentioned this to his psychologist/psychiatrist? This is something they should be able to help you with. I was going to suggest reward charts but then I fear this is something more compulsive and a sticker chart is just not going to cut it.

  • Does he have an OT? Usually they can help with this type of stuff.

  • We have an appointment Saturday morning. I planned on
    talking to her about it. I'm just trying to at least get him to not
    pick as much. I think for him it's more obsessive compulsive.
