What kind of paint do you use to paint a pumpkin?

The kids can decorate a small pumpkin and bring it to school, but it can't be carved or cut into for any reason. That leaves paint, tape and school glue. They will have to paint the face, but I don't know what kind of paint to let them use. Tempura flakes off (we tried that once).
