I cannot stop crying

I cut a red onion earlier and it was BAD. I couldn't finish because I couldn't see. Anyways my eyes are still dumping tears 3 hours later.

Is this in any way normal? Anything I can do?

In the meantime I will just lay here and cry I guess.

  • Have you washed your hands? What about a cool washcloth across your eyes? I don't know, I HATE how onions make me cry, so I don't use them often.

I've hear cutting them under running water, or in a bowl of water is supposed to help with the crying. I don't know though, I've never tried. We have a hand cranked dicer thing when we need cut up onions.

  • I hate when that happens! I love onions but sometimes they just tear up my eyes. I usually make sure to wash my hands really well and then get a washcloth with cold water and keep it on my eyes for 15 minutes.

  • Onion smell tends to cling, so you may need to do a really through washing not only of your hands. Jump in the shower.

  • If you refridgerate the onion it wont make you cry. Freezes up the enzymes. This one was straight from market to dinner.

  • I have heard of people using goggles.
I hold a match between my teeth. I do not know why except that is what I was told. It works most of the time.

Did you flush your eyes with water?

  • I would get burnt and cut if I did that. Probably end in tears too.

  • chew gum while you are cutting the onion next time

  • The action of cutting an onion releases a fine spray of droplets. Recent Japanese research has shown that these droplets contain an enzyme called lachrymatory-factor synthase and sulphur-containing compounds, which react to produce a powerful irritant called Syn-propanethial-S-oxide. When a droplet strikes your eye, you respond by producing a copious flow of tears to try and wash the irritant away.

We cry because our eyes are irritated by droplets the onion releases when we chop them. The irritating enzymes may still be on your hands hours later, producing tears if you touch your eyes. Strong onion odor can be removed from hands by rubbing them with dry salt? You can also try rubbing lemon juice over hands or running your hands over a stainless steel tap or spoon before washing with soapy water.
