Do you need a passport to enter Canada and return to the US?

We want to go to the Niagara Falls but not sure if the passport requirement is in force if you are traveling by car.

  • No. You need a government ID and your birth certificate, UNTIL June.. then you will need a passport. I grew up in Blaine WA, aka the Peace arch border crossing.. and until Sept 11 we didnt even need ID. But until June, you can still get by with your drivers license and birth certificate (PS, it cant be a copy.. has to be the real thing)

  • You are better off calling a travel agent and finding out for sure. I know people who got into Canada, but couldn't get back into the USA because they didn't have the correct documentation.

  • You do need one now. When we went in 2007 we did not have passports they only required a photo id and a birth certificate. They did ask for it and tell us that next time we would need a passport.

  • Before we went in 2007 we actually called the homeland security we found on a travel site they had an automated system that listed the requirements for the entry and exit of the more commonly traveled countries. I had forgotten about that.
