1 Bump

My 12 year old son has had a fever for 5 days. Now he has a bad cough. We have been to the doctor twice already. It isn't strep (3 swabs done). He told us to go home and rest and drink plenty of

liquids. Every night, even if the temp was 100 all day, it does up to 101. Any suggestions? Should we make a 3rd trip to the office? BTW, Halloween is in 2 days.

  • I wouldn't. It's most likely viral

  • Follow your doctor's advice and ride it out. Hopefully, he will feel well enough to trick or treat and not infect the neighborhood.

  • All you can do is rest and liquids. If he has to miss out on Halloween because of it, so be it.

  • It's a virus. Let the fever run it's course, keep him hydrated and get plenty of rest.. 101° isn't very high.
You can get him some of his favorite candy if he has to miss out on Halloween.

  • Not temps I'd be worried about. Sometimes it's just viral and needs 5-7 days to work itself out. You don't always need meds for a fever!!!

  • Could be walking pneumonia. My Son had it twice last winter. Did they listen for fluid in his lungs? It took us 3 Dr. visits to get him diagnosed. One night he coughed for 8 hours while he slept then threw up. Finally they said his lungs were filling with fluid. he was put on an antibiotic & was better in a few days. Then he got an ear infection then pneumonia again. Finally the last round of antibiotics worked. If he can't sleep & coughs persistently the have his lungs checked. GL!

  • Has pneumonia been ruled out? Should you call the doctor and ask if a chest x-ray be done? Just wondering...............

  • Oh BTW, my Son became very pale ( he was not absorbing enough oxygen) with dark circles under his eyes & ran a low grade fever continually until the antibiotic was given.
