  • I say, that's a mean thing to say but, I love you.

  • I'm going to cry when that happens. But they are right... I'd probably cry the first time and say I love you very much and I am sorry that you are upset over *this or that*, that was a very hurtful thing to say and I am very sad.

  • I used to say to mine (they are 20 and 17 now)

" I'm sorry you hate me, but you are still doing ______"
" That makes me sad that you say that, but I still want you to______"

or I'd tell them that it hurt me to hear them say that, but I'm sure they don't REALLY feel that way and the were still going to do what I wanted or have to live with a decision I made or whatever

  • I agree with the others- let them know that was hurtful, but you still love them. That should make him feel like shit. Guilt works! lol ;p

  • Mine have never said that but it would probably be an "ehhhhh okay" kind of response. They get even more mad when I act indifferent. Then they calm down and apologize.

  • "Well, I still love you. I'm only trying to do what's best for you. I understand you are mad at me, but it's because you did XYZ." I would never tell a six year old that it hurts me when they say that. I'm sure they would do it a lot more if they knew it hurt me.

  • "I HATE you"
"That's nice, I love you too," said as blandly as possible.

To me, I hate you, is a way for me to know that I'm doing my job as a parent.
