Should I wake my sick child up?

My 5 and a half year old has a stomach flu. He threw up 3 times this morning and then fell asleep around 2:30pm. It is now going on 5:30 and he's still asleep. Should I let him sleep or wake him up? How long should I let him sleep?

  • Let him sleep. The body does most of it's healing while we sleep. My daughter spent all weekend on the couch with Strep Throat. That is the MOST sleeping I've seen her do in a LONG time. She finally went back to school today.

  • I'd let him rest. Unless of course you would like to give him some soup and juice or fever reducer.

  • I would let him rest too, his little body is recuperating, he will wake up when he is ready...

  • Only because he is sick, I will say let him sleep. Any other time I would tell you to wake him up after an hour of sleep.

  • If you think he may need fluids so he doesn't dehydrate, I'd wake him up, let him sip some water or Pedialyte, have some toast & watch a little TV. If you don't wake him he may be up all night. Take his temperature & if he has a fever, make sure he eats a little then give him baby/children's Motrin.
