My cousin is pregnant.. drank 2 glasses of wine and got drunk

She read somewhere that if your pregnant you can have a couple glasses of red wine every once in a while. Im pretty sure ive read that too, but then again ive read that you shouldnt drink alcohol at all. Regardless, those 2 glasses got her drunk, and she ended up throwing up. I'm worried that she could have harmed the baby. Because if she was that drunk, her body obviously couldnt handle the alcohol, therefore she should have had less, or none at all, right? What are your thoughts?

It's between her and her doctor. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and that includes non-medical professionals who can't tell the difference between alcohol consumption and alcohol abuse giving medical advice about alcohol and pregnancy.

"A UC Riverside researcher has shown that exposure to alcohol during pregnancy not only affects a baby’s birth weight and behavior but also changes the way the brain is wired.

The findings run counter to claims that moderate drinking during pregnancy can be safe.

Neuroscientist Kelly Huffman found that the neocortex — the outer layer of the brain that handles higher-level functions — had nerve endings in radically different places in mice whose mothers had a steady diet of alcohol during pregnancy."

  • I have not read the study you mention but, based on the article, they kept the mice pretty much drunk the entire time:

"The mixture, she said, kept the blood alcohol level of the mice between .06 and .08, on the threshold of what is considered legally impaired for humans"

The article goes on to state that:

"While studies such as hers seem to show a clear connection to damage from alcohol, too little is known yet about the degree to which a child might be affected, Huffman said. The effect may even vary from individual to individual depending on the person’s ability to metabolize alcohol."

I'm not advocating excessive alcohol use in pregnancy. I'm in the "better safe than sorry" category myself but we do a disservice to women by scaring the crap out of them if they are even in the vicinity of a cup of coffee, a glass of wine or a cigar at any point in their pregnancy
