I woke up last night drenched in sweat and not breathing

That has never happened to me before, I was terrified.

Any ideas what would cause that?

I have no history of sleep apnea, I am not overweight. I was overly tired. The closest thing I can find online is a panic attack in my sleep.

I bolted upright from a dead sleep and was just holding my throat screaming in my head "breathe breathe!". I was about to run out to the living room and dial 911, I thought I was going to die.

That was horrible. Kind of scared to go to sleep tonight!

  • Did you have a crazy dream?

  • It could be that you were in a dream that was so intense it cause a panic attack in RL. If it happens again I would get check for sleep apnea. Sometimes, it does not really rouse you all the way from sleep and so you are just so tired all the time and then you stop breathing long enough that you do and that is the first you realize that something is wrong. Again, this could be nothing at all and I would not worry unless it happens again.

  • I agree about the dream, maybe drowning or something.
I have had falling dreams and woken up on the floor.
Scary though, you haven't had the flu or anything?

  • Were you hot when you woke up? If I get too hot when I'm sleeping I wake up in a panic attack and that's why I hate summer:/

  • Obviously you were breathing because you woke up. (: Could have been a dream.
