Bf Please help

how long can breast milk last at room temp after being pumped and how long in the fridge? After being in the fridge how long can it sit out before going bad? Any other info I should know about breast feeding and pumping? My dd is preterm so she's having trouble latching right now so I have to pump or use a sheild.

  • It can sit room temp up to an hour or so. In the fridge up to one week. In the freezer I think a couple months.

  • Fresh pumped it can be left at room temperature for at least 6 hours, and some sources say up to 10. after out of the fridge no longer than an hour.

  • Preferably, human milk should be refrigerated or chilled right after it is expressed. Acceptable guidelines for storing human milk are as follows. Store milk:

at room temperature (66-78°F, 19-26°C) for 4 hours (ideal), up to 6 hours (acceptable) (Some sources use 8 hours)
in a refrigerator (<39°F, <4°C) for 72 hours; up to 8 days (acceptable)
in a freezer (-0.4 to -4°F, -18 to -20°C) for 6 months (ideal) up to 12 months (acceptable)

  • Anywhere from 6-10 hours depending on who you ask about sitting out after pumping. One week of hold time in the fridge. After heating chilled milk its good for an hour. After unfreezing milk, its a 24 hour use.

  • As for trying to get baby to breast without a shild so you don't have to worry about all this pumping and storing. Kellymom

  • at room temp 8 hours (freshly pumped), in the fridge 8 days, freezer 3 months and deep freeze 6 months. Once it's warmed up it's good for 1 hour, but can't be put back in the fridge and warmed up again.
