Does a one year NEED socialization with kids his age?

My son has only been around his 5 year old sister and my 4 year old niece.

  • Not really. Mom may need socialization with others HER own age, though!

  • I think it's good for them to be around other children. When they are the youngest, and the only baby the world revolves entirely around them, if you take a 6 month old to a playgroup you'll see that even though they aren't old enough to play together, they are fascinated by the other babies they're age. If they are used to being around children their own age, and a range of ages, they are less likely to have that 'stranger' problem when they get older, and when they do learn to socialize and play with other kids they are used to being around them, and I think less likely to 'cling' to mommy at playgroup.

I however am not a childcare expert, and these are just my personal observations and opinions.

  • Not at one, they still aren't at the play together stage, so just having others to interact with is enough.

when 2-2.5, kids still parallel play, and play dates should be very short

  • I don't think so... I think that becomes more important about 3, when they can interact with each other on a higher level.

  • No. I work at a daycare. At around 18 months they sort of play together, but not really. At 2 definitely.
