ive been reading on hand expression during breastfeeding. i am 22 weeks pregnant and wondering if i should start to do this in preparation

  • Well how much will you want to express? Its certainly not the easiest or quickest method at all. Will you be working or is this just for rare occassions?

  • You mean before delivery? Only if you want to go into labor. You may be leaking some colostrum now...that's fine. Milk comes in as much as six days postpartum and you really can't rush it.

    At this moment, the only thing you can do to prepare is be as educated as you can be. Pick up a copy of "So That's What They're For" by Janet Tamaro. Get acquainted with kellymom.com. And do drop by the breastfeeding moms group here on cafemom.

  • Breast stimulation can cause contractions. I would not do this right now.
