  • I don't know if it has a name - it's in the Gallery of Candelabra which is part of the Vatican Musems that has classical roman sculpture which dates from the 3rd century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D.

I found a mention of it online here.

There are also full pictures of it here and here.

Sorry can't be of more help.

  • My mom's cousin is a priest in the Vatican. I could ask him if you want.

  • did some research. a lot of the artwork in the gallery was unearthed in Otricoli and brought to the Vatican. these are Roman copies of Hellenistic originals. so the subject matter of this sculpture is very likely to be based on ancient Roman mythology, exactly what story upon which it is based I was unable to find.

  • I think orangeorbie should ask the cousin living at the Vatican. That's about as close to truth as you could get ~ priests living there SHOULD know about it. Please let us ALL know what he says.
