  • You can't really paint, and if something needs repairs you can't really fix it yourself you need to ask the property owner.

  • Oh yeah, the pros are that you don't have to try to qualify for a mortgage and you're not as trapped in it if you need to move.

  • Pros: you don't have to pay for repairs and if you have any problems or disputes with neighbors or whatever your landlord can handle things for you. Rent is usually cheaper than a mortgage allowing you to save. You can leave an apartment when your lease is up (or pay a fee to get out sooner). You can't get rid of a home if you own it unless you sell it first or you carry that mortgage responsibility with you wherever you go.

Cons: It's not yours. You usually can't paint it or make any of your own cosmetic changes. You can't choose your upgrades (like prefering tile over lenolium). You have to wait for repairs to be done instead of hiring somoene yourself. Unless you lease-to-own, you're not building any long term wealth in the form of equity or property. You're not investing as you would by owning a home, your rent money is basically being flushed down the toilet rather than invested towards ownership.

  • how do you find rent to own homes

Answer by Anonymous at 7:05 PM on Feb. 21, 2009

  • Renting....cant paint unless you get permission to do so(some landlords will allow it they just make sure you paint it back to the color before you leave). Stuck in a lease so if something is bad or whatnot you are kinda stuck.
Something breaks you have to wait for the landlord to fix it(unless you are like us and we can fix it ourselves and just deduct the amt off rent).

Honestly, the only really bad part of renting is the not being able to do some things and they arent even big deals imho.

  • Your doing nothing for your future with renting but then again for the first time homeowner it can be expensive and sacry to try to get a mortgage.

  • you guys are so niave. renting can seriously suck if you don't have a good landlord. we rented this place, it was an apartment but it was rent, and they were horrible about fixing things. we moved in in august and my oven didnt work then and they didn't fix it until i called them on christmas eve and told them if they didnt' come and fix it i was getting a new stove and sending them the bill. the outlet in my bedroom caught on fire, as in flames coming out of it, and it took them 3 days to come fix it. we had rats and sewerage problems. and the landlord was awful about fixing things.
another place we rented, the nicest place in town, the management was horrid. they once told me the washer was leaking because i was putting too many clothes in it. it wasn't mine so i couldn't have it repaired myself. i just had to keep harassing them. and when we moved in we were supposed to have 24/7 access to the gym, which was great

  • since i was going to go at night and then they stopped that. and they never built the promised tennis court or kids playground. but they raised our rent 3 times in 18 months. we own for less. and the neighbors were always having sex in thier bathroom and i could hear when i took my bath. the upstairs people always stomped around and woke us up at night. the people next door smoked. the smoke would get into my apartment and get me and mine sick. the pest control sucked. the management were asses. rude, lazy, asses.
i tell you all this not to put you down on renting but to let you know its not all perfect. talk to the other people who rent there before you sign that lease. if they suck, you're stuck anyway.
