When did your son start saying more than Mama, Dada and BaBa

My son is 20 months old and says maybe 5 words. I am wondering if sons take longer to start talking and if this is normal.

  • My son is 23 months and has a vocabulary of about 100 words or so. He says anything and everything and can even form sentences, so I'd ask your pediatrician. My friend's son is like that and he's 28 months. He's in Early Intervention because they think he's autistic.

  • From what I have heard and experienced boys are a little slower than girls. I have two older girls and they both said more than my boy does, which is not much..he is only 11mth old. All he says is Mama. I would not worry too much about it yet. As long as he has other ways of communicating.

  • Boys do typically develope words later than girls, but most kids his age should have more than 5 words. Try keeping a pad near you tomorrow and writting down everything you hear your son say.He may have more words than you realize, it could be that he just doesn't use them all very often. If he really is only saying 5 words bring it up with his doctor. Should there be a problem theh earlier you get help the better your child's chances are.

  • My little cousin didn't talk until he was almost 3. He's completely fine.. You might go get him checked out just to make yourself feel better.. but honestly, I wouldn't worry toooooo much about it..

  • My son is 19 months and has a vocab of about 35-45 words. But I have a friend with a 19 month old and he doesn't talk much. I also have a friend with a 16 month old and he just jabbers mostly- not many words yet. I would talk to your pediatrician and see what they recommend.

  • Boys do take longer but if you are concerned, talk to your doctor.
Also, make certain you aren't just counting the nicely pronounced words. My DD (22 months) still says DEE for balloon but it counts as a word because she always says DEE for balloon and never for anything else. Toddler words will be missing many sounds, have the wrong sounds in them, be only partial words, etc. They are still words.
