Consumer Confidence at all time low......

"The New York-based Conference Board said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index, which was down slightly in January, plummeted more than 12 points in February to 25, from the revised 37.4 last month. That was well below the 35.5 level that economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected."

Obama suporter or not, don't you think it's about time for Obama to start showing some confidence in improvements to our economy that he is trying to make? If he doesn't stop talking about how awful it is and how awful it's going to get, it's only going to get worse! He HAS to start showing some confidence himself. This WILL become a self fulfilling prophecy if he doesn't stop!

Do you think he should change the way he is responding this vocally?

  • In the wake of 9/11, Bush had to go on air and encourage people to go shopping and go to movies, dinner, etc. People who don't understand economics accused him of being callous, but reality is the economy very nearly imploded that week because nobody was doing anything. Small businesses all over the country still failed that year and the next as a result of that lost month of revenues. Entire shopping malls went under, increasing urban decay.
Obama's message is the equivalent of coming on TV the week after 9/11 and encouraging everyone to stay home. Thanks to his repeated message, people who are financially secure and have money to spend are not spending it out of fear that they could lose their jobs any minute. They aren't investing because the bank could fold any day now.
This is not a message of hope, and his misguided attempt at keeping it real is only making it worse. There is a REASON politicians smile so much.

  • you've got to be kidding.
he's constantly trying to spread a message of hope.
so much so that he was made fun of for not being 'realistic' enough during his campaign.
now he's still conveying a message of hope but he's also trying to make the american people understand that it may get worse before it gets better--but that it will get better.

  • No, all he is saying is how he inherited this problem and it's so awful and how it's going to get so much worse before it gets better.  And you might also figure that the stimulas pkg is part of what is dropping consumer confidence!

  • i don't know which press conferences you've been watching... heck, even in the inauguration he had the same message of america prevailing and things getting better.

  • ah, i will agree that he didn't come off very hopeful while he was reaching out to americans in an effort to gain support for the recovery act. i know some comments of his during that time period were not very positive at all!

  • Idk, on GMA Bill Clinton said Obama should be more optimistic when speaking about the economy. I think a lot of people are noticing that he needs to change his tone.

  • The sky is falling, haven't you heard Obama? It's a crisis X 25 in each speech of his, not to mention the armageddon, dire times, and depression coming along too.
If consumer confidence is low or scared to death Obama can get his bills passed. When he is done with his paperwork, all of a sudden he will be spreading tales of prosperity and robust economic turnaround, all because of HIM. And the followers will eat it up, and start spending again. My how simple that works!
