How do I know if my baby has rotavirus or diarrhea from other causes?

She is 11 months old, unvaccinated, 100.4 fever, watery green diapers, no appetite all day for food, but is latching on often (not sure how much milk she is getting). She cut three teeth over a week ago....this has never happened before.

  • Rotavirus usually makes them have diarrhea for a week or so.

Keep her hydrated. I'd only use tylenol for a high-grade fever. Fever is your body's defense against germs and viruses.

  • Rotavirus gives them this yellow liquidy, horrible smelling diarrhea. It is not mistaken for anything else! (been through it several times)

Do not give her pedialyte for diarrhea!!! Pedialyte, gatorade and juice make diarrhea WORSE because of the sugar in them! Give water or nursing...nursing is better (obviously)

Watch her for dehydration and if her temperature goes over 102 start giving Tylenol provided she isn't puking (that's usually the next step)

Don't push food right now. She may have an upset stomach and as a "self preservation" kind of thing doesn't want to put anything in her stomach!

If she does want to eat, give starches and carbs...breads, crackers, rice, potatoes, bananas, helps bulk it up.
