my child is 17 months, has been off a bottle since 11 months old, but has no interest in drinking from a straw. At what age does a child usually start drinking from a straw?

  • Mine were all drinking from straws when they were 1.5-2yrs old. I didnt "teach" them per say...we dont always have straws around and their sippy cups were the silicone top kinds. I dont know what age they SHOULD know how to do that though.

  • My daughter started this week and she's 16 months old, she drinks from a nuby sippy cup.
It's funny how fast she sucks it down. Try with that cup

  • My son has drank from straws since he was 10 months old. He will only drink from cups with straws and he is 20 months old. He never drank from sippy cups.

  • My son could around 12 months and then because I just used sippies with him he forgot how. I have been trying to get him to do it now that he is older, but he just doesn't get it!

  • my daugter has been since before she could walk and she was walkin by 9 months... but my nephew is 4 months older than her and he didn't start til he was bout 19-20 months i think... but it all depends on the child. i have learned the more you push him, the more he will fight it... just relax... it will come to him. just may take time. good luck!

  • My son, who is almost 2, sipped through a straw probably a month after or before his 1st birthday. I never taught him to do it. He just got interested watching us adults sipping through them.

  • Around one usually. Try buying one of those fun bright colored straws and get him excited about trying. Or the cups that have the spiraled straws built in that they can watch the liquid come up through. Or allow only one special drink he likes through a straw, like maybe you can only have apple juice through a straw? Maybe he accidently sucked too much in and chocked or something once and still remembers it and is scared of them? That's pretty common! Just make it fun and he'll start using one :)
