will not use fork or spoon

my almost 16 month old refuses to use or even try and use a fork or spoon.. everything has to be in her hand. She will not even eat if I try to feed her... any suggestion on how to get her to start?

  • You just keep offering.
At this age, kids are more concerned with getting as much food as possible into the mouth as quickly as possible.
Once she hits 2, you start insisting a little bit more. Try to get that first bite or two with a spoon or fork.
Once she hits 2.5, you start insisting more, even ending the meal if the fingers are used.
By 3, she should be a pro.

  • my sons 2 and the same way everything is a finger food, I try giving him big people spoons and Forks and that makes him feel like a big boy, but he still isn't completely on them.

  • I thought about giving her a big ppl spoon or fork but was scared she might poke her eye not funny...she likes to wave it all around so I usually take it from her...but I guess I just have to stop being scared and let her experiment...

  • My son didn't start using his silverware well until he was about 2. DD is 18 months and starts with one, throws it down and starts shoveling food in her mouth with her hand.
