When do they stop putting EVERYTHING in their mouths?!?

I can't take her anywhere without worrying about what is going into her mouth next! She is 10.5 mo. old and I'm just wondering when this phase will be over. Is there anything I can do to teach her not to besides telling her no, icky and fishing it out?

  • Some babies/kids are very oral and will do this a lot, and for a LONG time. Other babies never put things in their mouths. It is a very individual thing. I'd suggest getting used to saying "no" and fishing things out, as well as keeping a close eye, for at least the next year :-)

  • I have been wondering this too! And when I asked my pedi he just gave me a smart answer of 'when they are 20'. I will be curious to see what people say.

  • I'll let you know when my 5 year old stops. ugh. (although he does have other challenges...he has SPD)

My other two are 3 and 2 years...they've pretty much stopped putting things in their mouths. I can't really say when they finally stopped, though.

  • Not going to stop anytime soon. But around 12 months your baby may start responding to your saying "no" so at least you can control some of it! My friend with a 5 1/2 year old laughed when I asked her this same question, since hers still hasn't stopped. Just remember, if you're in a public play space other mom's won't be scandalized because of this because all kids do it.
