My doctor told me to start adding rice cereal to my 6wk old son feedings. He is breast fed but throws up more than what stays down, they say he has reflux. My question is how much cereal do you add to a 4oz bottle to start?

  • My son was also diagnosed with acid reflux at 6 wks his doctor said 1/2 tsp for every 2 0z. At first i only put it in a few bottles a day but the doctor said to do it every bottle. Zayne (my son) has done well with it but has put on weight fast not sure if it is linked to this but i am always wondering........ he still spits up sometimes with the cereal bottles but not as bad. Sometimes the cereal will bind them up the pediatrician recommended 1/4 tsp of corn syrup added to one bottle a day to help with this reaction. Also incline crib mattress with (phonebooks underneath) feed sitting up. Keep in sitting position for 1/2 hour after eating. Dr. Brown's bottles work wonders with reflux but are pricey. 5 bottle starter kit is like $20.00(also a pain to clean and sanitize) but worth it. Zantac was prescribed to him but tastes bad. I didn't like giving him medicine like that him being so small. Hope this is helpful!

  • I'd say start w/ a half a teaspoon and increase slowly to a teaspoon if needed.

  • I'd say to ask your pediatrician since he recommended it be done.

  • Call the pedi and ask, do not ask these mothers.

  • Personally I would get a second opinion. This could sacrifice a breastfeeding relationship.

  • I agree with a second opinion. There is a lot you can do about reflux in a BF baby before resorting to pumping and bottle feeding with rice cereal (which is not without risk). Talk to your doc again and check out:

  • Ther are many other things that can xause a BF baby to throw up especially an overactive let down, I would suggest talking to an LC as well.
