do you really have to take a cna class before you take the cna certification test?

im curious if you are required to take the cna class in order to get the cna certification since you are able to buy the book that teaches the same things from a bookstore. it does all the same prep work a class would. i have not found a class that actually does hands on teaching, ive only found classes that are really just prep work. 20 hours of prep for a test to be specific. i dont want to have to pay $300 to take a prep class when i can study just the same at home for $50. does anyone know about this?
