Babies and beans?

Are beans okay for 8 month old babies? I mashed up some white cannelloni beans for my son and he really liked them. They were in a Minestrone soup. I also let him have some broth and other vegetables from the soup. They didn't seem to effect him in any way, so is it okay to continue giving him stuff like this, or should I stop?

  • No reason not too. I gave my daughter beans at 9 mo. You just want to make sure you mash them or at least squish them (if you're giving them as a finger food) because they are round in shape and thus a choking hazard. As a general rule, you want to wait 4 days in between new foods to watch for a reaction.

  • Obviously vegetables are fine, I don't see why beans would hurt him other than give him gas maybe. The only thing I would personally be concerned with about soup is all the salt.

  • No problem, we did at that age, too. You'd know by now if there was an allergy problem, so no reason to stop if you've started and he tolerated them fine!

  • The soup was homemade by his grandma, so there isn't a whole lot of added salt.

  • Beans & veggies are fine. 8 months is an ok time to start healthy solids. Home made food is the best option.

  • Buffy's mom, What does that have to do with my question?

  • They are a bad choice if you have food allergies in your family. Beans are a legume (as are sweet peas) which is what peanuts are. So, if you have food allergies in your family, you should not introduce beans at all until after age 2.

  • Nobody on either side of our family has any known food allergies. Thanks though, ThrivingMom, I hadn't thought about that.
