We did it when the children were small. We traded years with a neighbor. It was a lot of fun for all. One year I blew out a dozen eggs so I'd have just the empty shells to dye. Blech. I had planned to scramble up the eggs for a couple meal, but I couldn't bear to eat them. I still have the shells though. I dyed them with an Easter Egg dye that made them shiny and brightly colored. For the children I let them dye the hardcooked eggs with regular egg dye. The shiny stuff had to be removed from fingers with paint thinnner.
