What are some good excercises for...

Getting myself in shape for Firefighter School? Right now I really just need to get back some muscle in my arms and lose some weight in my mid-section. I do not have any weight or equiptment nor do I have money to go to a gym. So what are some simple things I could do to get into shape? I have been walking regularly. That is deff. helping with my legs. But what about my arms and mid-section? Oh and what are some endourance excercises I could do?

  • Push ups for sure, pulls ups (hang from a bar and use your arms to raise yourself.) Sit on a chair, move to the front of the chair, grasp the chair with your hands on each side, hold on tight, walk your feet away from the chair and lower your body toward the floor and up using your arm muscles. You can't lose weight in just a part of your body, although a low-carb diet thins the mid-section a bit. But for toning, abdominal curls work, - press your lower back to the floor and curl your head and neck and just enough of your chest to feel it in your abs, and for the hip flexors - lower abs- press your lower back and curl your knees up to your chest. You should google to get the precautions and numbers, all I can give you is a quick summary.

  • Endurance- its your pick. Choose some that you enjoy doing, switch them off on different days. Swim, cycle, run, power walk, tennis and other vigorous sports, aerobics, jump rope, whatever you enjoy.

  • Push ups, pull ups, lunges, squats, and for endurance--try ice skaters and running. Kick boxing is excellent, also.
