Do you have to dial the area code before a phone number?

We do where I live, but where we used to live, we didn't have to.

Weird.

  • I've never heard of a place where you didn't have to dial the area code if your out of the local area code. Like ours is 559, the county just north is 209. We have to dial 1 then the 209.

  • In the area I live in, we have to dial the area code no matter if the call is local or long distance. If it's local, then we dial just the area code and phone number. If it's long distance, then it's 1 + area code + phone number.
