  • would you rather we not have the number of "convicted felons" and instead they be running loose on the streets causing havoc?

  • Because we DON'T enforce the law like we should. Everything is always just a slap on the wrist. If you look at other countries, their prisons aren't as "glamorous" as ours. It should be back to them not getting a bed. Eat nothing but food and water. It should be PRISON. Not just a place where you can't leave. Our jail systems are jokes. Someone could be sentenced 15 years and get out at 3 years on "good behavior" WHAT A JOKE!

  • I think a lot of it has to do with mandatory minimum sentencing for drug offenses and the three strikes law. We don't spend enough on rehabilitation or community services.

If you lock some one up for theft, then put them back out on the streets with a felony conviction, no schooling, no training, and no money, they are probably going to steal again.

  • Based on the link, since black men have the highest prison numbers, and it has skyrocketed in the last 25 years, I blame RAP MUSIC.

  • My opinion is that we have prisons that treat the inmates like hotel guests. Internet, TV, library, gym, three square meals a day, bed, toilet......it beats living in the street or having to get a job like the rest of us. They get this treatment paid for by US.

  • Spend some time in a Mexican prison. It's a pretty good deterrent.

What do you suggest, we let everyone out? Personally, I'd like to see more criminals behind bars.

  • Pfff....because some people don't find it "fair" to just straight out kill child molester and rapist.

  • Because we have more individual dense-population areas than other countries, and that leads to higher crime. Some countries' largest cities are barely the equivalent of Minneapolis, and they only have one or two large population centers, with the rest of the nation spread out around it. We have 45 major cities bigger than Minneapolis, and they all have large rings of population surrounding them.

Same reason so many of our other stats are out of whack with what "looks" like where they should fall. You can't compare the US to other nations when, in most cases, each individual state is equal to or bigger than those countries. You're better off comparing individual countries to the state that has the closest population density (meaning number of people per square mile, not total population period)
