  • I've always heard babies say dada first because it's easier than forming an "M" sound.

  • Dada is a sound they can usually make before Mama, but that doesn't mean they mean what they're saying. You can decide to count it as a word as soon as you want to. Our daughter said Dadada very early, at first it meant nothing and then it eventually meant Dad AND Mom.

  • Pepsi! That was my daughter's first real word. She had been saying dadada for a while but she never really connected it to her dad so we never really considered it her first word. We decided she was just making noises that were easy to form. The first word she ever said that she connected to an actual item was Pepsi. It came out Peppi but she held her hands out and grabbed for the case of cans while saying it.

As to the original question though, Dada will most likely come first.

  • Dada usually comes first but my son said Mama about 9 months before he said Dada. It is an old wives tale that if they say mama first your next born will be a girl. Who knows!

  • MINE SAYS "MOM" WHEN SHE CRIES AND "DADA" WHEN SHE'S PLAYING... SHE SAID MOM FIRST THOUGH.... AROUND 3 MONTHS...NOW SHE'S 7 MONTHS AND SAYS DADDY-WELL SHE SAYS "DADTHEE" IT'S FUNNY CAUSE SHE'S ONLY SEEN HIM TWICE DURING HER ENTIRE 7 MONTHS. MY HUSBANDS DEPLOYED. HE'S SPENT MAYBE A MONTH TOTAL WITH HER.... I GUESS IT'S JUST EASIER TO SAY. SHE SAYS NANA TOO NOW.
