How old was your baby when s/he started to crawl? or maybe didn't at all?

My son is 6 months old. He hates being on his tummy, but doesnt want to lay down. Not sure how to encourage him to try crawling. Is he too young. Friends say some of their kids never even crawled.

  • My son is 7mths old and hasnt crawled yet he hasnt liked being on his tummy until the last couple of weeks( he does roll over), I bought a water mat that has a ducky you blow up on it and he just loves it, has really made him like tummy time alot more.

  • My son didn't crawl until he was a little over 7 months old. Don't worry, your baby will get there.

  • Mine was early. She was crawling the day she turned 6 months. What's "normal"?
About half of all babies start in the 7th month. That means half are later than that or never do. And that "crawl" could be more of a body drag / army crawl with the belly dragging on the floor.
By 10 months most babies that are going to crawl can crawl well, with their bellies off the ground.

  • My son crawled at 4 months and my daughter at 5 months, they both started walking at 9 months. Our daughter hated being on her belly so she just finally realized that she would have to crawl to get off of it!

  • My daughter crawled around 4 months, she loved tummy time. She started walking at 7 months and now she's running all over the place at 12 months old :) I've heard that some babies never even crawl just go straight to walking then I've heard of babies starting to crawl at 10 months.

  • I had crawlers at 6, 7 and 8 months (but not in that order)

I never crawled until I was 3 years old, but walked at 8 months according to my mom. (not sure I believe her, though...she was never known for accuracy LOL)

  • Not every child crawls - in fact, I believe the American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't even consider it a milestone any longer.

My oldest didn't bother crawling until after he learned to walk. When he did start it was simply a means to get into places he wouldn't normally be able to walk into. ;) He cruise early though. He was "walking" holding onto tables and/or hands around 6 months old. He began to walk on his own at 10 1/2 months.

My daughter didn't really crawl either. She walked at about 9 1/2 months old.
