Can a baby sleep too much?

  • Yes and no. In the first two weeks, it is not uncommon for babies to sleep an upwards of 16 hours per day.

    If a baby falls asleep on his/her own and still sleeps at night, I would assume that he/she needs the amount of sleep they're getting for growth. Babies that are sick will also sleep more.

    If they're sleeping out of boredom because they're not played with or stimulated enough I would say that isn't a good reason to be sleeping.

    If you're worried that your baby is not alert enough due to being sick or injured, I would call your doctor.

  • I looked it up and just about everything I found said babies should get up to 15 hours of sleep in a day.
