How do I help with back pain?

I am currently 19 weeks pregnant with my second child. With my previous pregnancy I had never experienced very much back pain. When I started to have back pain I talked to my doctor. My doctor says that the pain in normal and that I should just take tylenol. However, lately it seems the pain is a lot stronger. I was wondering if any moms who have experienced this type of pain during pregnany if they might have any remedy suggessions that might help? If so please answer.

  • Did you have an epidural with your last preganancy and did you deliver vaginally? I developed serious back and pelvic pain after I had my 3rd son. With my last son the pain was almost unbearable while I carried him and a few months afterwards. I discovered that you can get a pelvic tear if the doctor's are too rough with you during delivery when you are numb under the effects of the anesthesia.
But you can also have back pain if you are carrying a big baby, or if you are heavier.
The only thing that helped me was taking some tylenol and doing some light stretching exercises to strengthen my back and stomach muscles. Arching your back and squeezing your tummy muscles will help. Try to not sit too long or stand on your feet too long and it can't hurt to have someone massage your back for you. I hope these suggestions help.

  • yah ive been getting severe back pain as well.. i went out and bought a body pillow and put it between my legs and my arms while i sleep.. it makes my back straight.. i also take hot showers right before bed and get comfy pajamas on.. comfort is key.. sometimes i lay on a heating pad which is completely normal.. i take tylenol before bed as well.. so with the mix of the hot shower relaxing your muscles.. comfy pajamas.. a mild heating pad.. and some tylenol.. your back will feel much better..

  • When I was pregnant, with my daughter, I started getting SEVERE back pain that was constant & some things made it worse. My obgyn kept telling me it was normal & then when it got worse, she said it was my sciatic nerve. It didn't go away & I ended up off work for 3 weeks before she sent me to a physical therapist who found that the left side of my pelvis was dislocated at my back!! I ended up going to physical therapy for about 1.5 mos before it would stay in place longer than 2 days. Needless to say, I was off work that whole time too & it was VERY sore when I returned to work. It still pops out sometimes, but it doesn't hurt as bad as it did when I was pregnant.

  • You could just be carrying this baby differently than your first and its putting more pressure on different muscles. It could also be pressure on your sciatic nerve, and thats very very painful. You can go to a chiroprator and actually they say seeing one while your pregnant once a month, helps you have a fast (vaginal) delivery. You can also do simple things on your own like doing different stretches every day.

  • I am pregnant with baby number 4 and I have always had chronic back pain. The doctors run the usual test and the can't find anything. The only alternative left is an mri, but they can't do it now cause I am pregnant. As for pain the doctors here won't prescribe anything because of all the drug addicts that live around here that doctor shop. I feel sorry for you I know what your going through. Good Luck!!!

  • I had pretty bad back pain when I was pregnant too. I agree with the body pillow idea above- invest in one if you haven't already- it helps to get you at least a little bit more comfortable when you're trying to sleep. I also piled a TON of pillows up behind my back and that seemed to help. I pretty much surrounded myself with pillows LOL.

The only thing I found that helped with the pain during the day was one of those smelly heat up bean bag type things. If you've ever been to the mall- they have the kiosk's in the center and while you're walking they come up and ask to put it on your neck- they smell like lavender and some other stuff but it's really not the best smell LOL. But you heat them up in the microwave for about 30 seconds and it REALLY helps. A regular heating pad didn't help me, but for some reason, those stinky heat up bean bags were a miracle. LOL. Hope I helped.

  • I got this product called baceaz after I developed back pain and it worked a treat. What was good about it was I was able to use it everywhere. I put it on in the morning it's so light you simply forget you are wearing it but if you sit anywhere, boy is it good. I remember one day we had to fly to Chicago and I used it in the car, at the airport, in the plane, at a restaurant and it was simply amazing. I use mine all the time at home watching TV. My Dr. has even started recommending to his other pts. Try it, it's cheap and it helped me.

  • I think it's really important to pay careful attention to your bed and how your body is when you're sleeping. You spend many hours sleeping there so of course it's going to affect your back.
