what does a soft cervix mean during your third trimester

my friend is a high risk and she just changed doctors and was told that her cervix is soft but dont know what it means she has had premature labors in the past and wants to make sure that things are ok

  • The cervix will naturally soften as she gets close to delivery (it's what doctors refer to as being "effaced.") The softening of the cervix allows it to dialate more easily and let the baby through when he/she is ready to be born. If she's high-risk due to her cervix being soft, perhaps they feel that it is getting too soft, too soon?
