Why does the bible continually refer to Christians as "sheep" when sheep are the dumbest creatures on earth, and why does God refer to unsaved, or evil people as "goats" when even now days shepherds will put a few goats in with a flock of sheep to keep them from all stampeeding over a cliff in the dark or some such stupidity?

Does God really want us to be stupid and sheep-like?

  • This is a very good question. From my understanding sheep are docile, trusting, fragile, innocent and obedient. They only trust and heed to the voice of their shepherd. These are attributes Christians are to have while following the Good Shepherd. Christians are to trust, obey and only follow (spiritually) his voice. The bible says for us to trust in the Lord with all of our heart and lean not to our own understanding and in all our ways acknowledge him and he will direct our paths. It also says that his sheep knows his voice and the voice of a stranger he will not follow. You see goats are stubbourn and and want to use their own senses for everything. Sinners have no desire to want to follow God they feel they know everything judging by what they see at the moment and make their decisions from that not knowing what is up ahead beyond that. Christians should have an understanding that what may seem right at the moment.

  • I think you're reading way too much into this.

  • because like sheep we need a shepherd to lead us....

  • Because the sheep represents the trust and kindness of the Christians and the goat represents the loudness and meaness of the evil.

  • perhaps because we are to follow our "shepherd" with blind faith trusting in him always in all things. perhaps the "goats "are there to best a test us and help to stay on the straight and narrow way.

  • may not be good for them in the future. With the leading of the Good Shepherd he sees what is up ahead and will detour us from the future danger., but this only comes through sheep obeying and recognizing the voice of their Shepherd.

  • jenettyshome: I hope you know he is talking about characteristics that separates the Godly from the ungodly. The Godly will obey and follow which is a fundamental requirement for any Christian. The ungodly will buck and refuse to do what they are told spiritually, they make their own interpretation based on how comfortable it make them which is stubbornness and insubordination just like goats!!!!!!!!

  • The reason followers of God are urged to be like sheep is because that was the most appropriate analogy that the men who wrote the bible could up with especially considering they were writing to a largely agricultural society.
