Can I use applesauce in place of oil in a box cake mix?

I want to cut the fat content in the box cake mix I'm using to make cupcakes. I have heard that you can use applesauce instead of oil. Has anyone ever done this and does it taste any different?

  • I do! I also put it in brownie mixes. Doesn't change the taste and I find the cake is usually mositer.
