  • So if people stop following laws about murder, rape and stealing, should we just abolish the rules because no one follows them? That really does not make sense. Most people spend their lives doing the best they can to avoid most of the sins that the commandments address. Many many people try to obey all 10. You cannot just get rid of rules because no one wants to follow them.

  • I wasn't saying to get rid of them, I just asked what the point in having them is if no one follows them.

  • There are people who do follow them. To say nobody does is an exaggeration. Maybe it feels like it at times, but I promise you there are people who are still good.

  • The 10 commandments were written 4000 years ago. For that many years, people have followed the commandments. If you are not saying that they should be gotten rid of, then what are you asking.

    1. Do not have any other gods before me.
The point- There is only one God. I realize not everyone believes this.

    2. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

You should not worship anything but God. This includes putting worldly things before Him.

    3. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.

You should not do anything evil in the name of the Lord.

    4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.

God set aside 7 days to create the world and everything in it. In exchange, we are t

  • The point is to show us that we can't. To show us that we need God.

And no matter how good anyone is, no one follows them completely, no one is without sin.

  • worshiping him and resting.

    5. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

God gave us parents to bring us closer to him. We are to honor them as a way of respecting God and being thankful for that gift.

    6. You shall not kill

God is the one with power over life and death. We should not be doing that job for him.

    7. You shall not commit adultery.

Once we make covenants and give vows, we should honor them for the rest of our lives. Stepping outside of them is wrong.

    8. You shall not steal.

Taking that which is not yours is wrong. We should work for the things we want and need instead of taking from someone who has.

    9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.

Lying is wrong. Lying about someone around us is evil.

  • 10. You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.

Wanting things that are not ours is a quick way to unhappiness. Being happy with what we have is important.

These rules, when followed even loosely can lead to great happiness in life. That is the point. Which one of these rules is about making our lives miserable? None of them. Why not follow them. Leading a righteous life is the path to happiness. Most religions, while not necessarily using this format, follows the same rules.
