  • It's an oil that induces diareah. It is NOT safe for labor and it is NOT going to induce you. Some women take it and end up going into labor because they were so close that when the castor oil dehydrated them they started contracting.

Either way it's a horrible way to go into labor and a horrible way to spend your labor. It can also cause the baby to have the first bowl movement in the womb which can be extremely dangerous and can even lead to death if not tended to properly and immediately. Also dehydration can restrict your viens and there for restrict blood flow to the uterus causing the baby to go into distress. CASTOR OIL IS A GOOD WAY TO END UP WITH A SICK BABY AND A C-SECTION!

  • It's a stimulant laxative. If your baby is ready, it does work to induce labor but it's not pleasant. It causes your intestines to contract which triggers your uterus. Or if you aren't ready to have your baby it makes you puke and poop and generally feel like crap for a few hours while you become dehydrated.

All that said, I have used it. Once successfully and once unsuccessfully. The time I used it successfully, I was overdue(past 42 weeks) and unable to have a medical induction and didn't want one(VBAC). I don't regret the choice.

  • Last annoy...if you didn't want a VBAC (Vaginal Delivery After Cesearen) that means you wanted a c-section so how was the castor oil successful?

  • anon 1131: she didn't want a medical induction because she was a VBAC.

As far as castor oil, it's a vegetable oil made from the castor plant. It's used as a laxative and NOT safe for induction. I don't care if it has worked for some, it is still not SAFE, and is virtually irresponsible.
