Can your 4 1/2 year old do the buttons on his pants?

My 4 1/2 year old is having difficulty doing the button on his pants, and i'm not sure why. We have showed him that you need to line up the buttons and push them together. And he still doesn't seem to get it. I am not sure wether or not he is not ABLE, or not WILLING, although I suspect it is the latter. So, please tell me, are your 4 1/2 year olds able to do this task?

  • Buttons or snaps? My oldest just started doing the snaps on his pants when he was about 4 1/2. He had a fine motor skill delay. I was told it's actually not uncommon that 4 year olds can't snap jeans.

Buttons, he doesn't have any on his pants, but he was buttoning shirts before he was snapping. My 3 year old can button his shirts (moderate fine motor skill delay) but can't even come close to snapping yet.....

  • my daughter can button her pants, but I think its not a huge deal if he can't do it yet, he'll get there. My daughter has trouble with one pair of pants, and I think its just a matter that they don't understand the amount of pressure to apply to snap it. Good luck!

  • Mine cannot yet either. He has fine motor issues so we are working on botton, snap, starting a zipper, holding pen properly. Any suggestions?
