  • What age? We started early, like 5-6 months, with a very consistent routine. If you're doing it with a toddler, pick a time to begin and keep it consistent. I would talk them through all the steps as you go. "Ok, let's pick up your toys so you can have your bath... Ok, let's drain the water and then we'll get your pajamas on... After pajamas, we'll brush your teeth and then you can pick out a couple of books..." We do those, then turn out the lights, sing a song, and put them in bed. As they start learning the routine, you can start asking them what comes next. My 22 month old literally runs from one station to the next, so excited that she knows what she's about to do. She never protests bedtime (because she likes every step that gets her there, and she knows what's coming). She talks to herself for anywhere between 5 minutes and 45 minutes, but she always goes to sleep without crying and has since about 6 months.
