What should be the governments role?

We have had many questions about politics, government, and the people lately. I do wonder what the American people feel the role of their government is. Is it to ensure that everyone has healthcare, shelter, food, clothing, and education or is it to ensure the environment to obtain these things. I also wonder what definition you give a Right or a Privilege and is their a difference in the two. Please answer these to the best of your ability, I am writing an article on the topic and would love some input. Thanks~!

  • (continued)The government doesn't allow prayer and open expression of religion in public schools because that is the realm of everyone so what will happen when we have public hospitals...will the expression of religion be curbed there as well to make sure everyone is "comfortable"? We already have a number of social programs and many of them are not very effective..the government ( esp on a national level) is not an effective mode of social change. This is what I believe....we need to help our neighbors....we need to protect our and our neighbors right to choices and freedom...we need to take personal resposibility, The government is employed by the people to accomplish certain tasks that are pretty specific and everything else the people should work to accomplish as individuals and in groups independently.

  • The government should stay out! We should get our own healthcare, shelter, food, clothing and education. When the government takes over than we are not free anymore.

  • It is too A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labour the bread it has earned – this is the sum of good government.

    – Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), Writings

  • Healthcare, shelter, food, and education are rights. We should ALL be able to have access to these. If that means the government has to step in and lend a hand....... so be it. But these should not just be for the rich or the super-rich, they should be for ALL citizens of this country.

We have a right to basic needs of survival and life. A priviledge extends to luxuries.

Example: We have a right to shelter. A floor, 4 walls, and a roof. A priviledge is that shelter has 6 bedrooms, 3 baths, marble floors, and a gourmet kitchen.

  • That Thomas Jefferson quote is good. However, I don't think that Jefferson had a CLUE what would happen when industry and corporations grew so large, and had so much power that THEY would be the ones running the government. He was to busy rewriting the gospels and taking all the miracles out to think this far ahead, I suppose.

  • We need a smaller government it is too big and is too invasive in our lives. We need a fair tax code and to do away with the IRS. We need people to be responsible for their own lives and not depend on others to pay their way. The Government need to shrink and move out of the way. Some will not make it but that is their choice if they don't make an effort to take control of their own lives.

  • Wow, everyone providing their own education - sounds like we'll wind up with a lot of ignorant people. So, do we expect employers to provide healthcare, adequate wages and safe conditions to employees out of the kindness of their hearts? That's working so well now, even with regulation requiring them to do at least a bare minimum (think Enron, Merck, etc.). Take that away and you'll see below poverty wages (and even richer executives), child labor, unsafe working conditions, a lot more homelessness. Sounds wonderful.
