when potty training my daughter how long should i have her sit on the potty at a time

i am just now starting to potty train my daughter is will be 2 in 2 mths and when i take her to the potty seat she sits there but doesnt pee, so i need to know how long i should have her sit there waiting for her to pee?

  • as long as possible but dont make her miserable. Read a story, take her potty and let her watch cartoons, color at the coffee table, play pat-a-cake, anything to keep her still that you know she likes. If yu force the issue it will just reinforce her to be strong willed and fight you on it.

  • I personally recommend a different method that doesn't have her sitting there at all just waiting to go. Check out the CM group "Potty training moms" there's a post called "3-day potty training post" with some information on the method we used with our 19 mo daughter. It worked great. You move them straight to underwear and don't take them to the potty until they start to go... it sounds extreme and isn't for everyone, but it made sense to us and worked really well. Sitting them on the potty and waiting doesn't teach them what it feels like when they need to go. It can also create some resentment of the potty which you'll have to undo at some point. Just a thought...
