why so smart

Hubby says that our son is so advanced for his age because he has always been a happy baby. We always push for the best life for our son. Hubby thinks that because he has always been happy that makes the endorphins in his brain loose which makes you feel good and he thinks cause he feels so good he is able to take in more. Does this sound right? My son is 14months and can already say and associate words with the objects...he can say roughly 20 words and can already put together two to three word sentences. Is this advanced? What is average for a 14months old?

  • spunds like you dh is trying to explain something that has no explanation. Sounds like your little one is right on target. I wouldn't go overboard and call him a genius though

  • I think it is great that your child is happy and has a good life. I think all parents share that goal. But when it comes to development, it is a natural thing. Kids develop at different rates and that is just a part of who they are. Some kids start earlier and some start later and it usually has no effect or predictive value about how far they will go educationally. The guidelines you read about are only markers to know when a child might need to be evaluated for delays. Lots of kids are ahead of that curve, and many of the ones who are behind or lagging toward the end of the range wind up to be just as intelligient in the long run. It is developmental and it doesn't relate to actual intelligience or potential. Enjoy your son and share his happiness when he learns something new....and don't make too many assumptions or put too much pressure on him. He is still a baby and it is too early to focus on achievement, in my opinion.
