Can you make frosting without powdered sugar?

I was going to try out the peanutbutter frosting seen on the DailyBuzz, but halfway through I realized I don't have any more powdered sugar! Is it salvageable?

  • There are lots of recipes, here is one I found online:,196,149179-249200,00.html

    1 1/4 c. sugar
    4 tbsp. cocoa
    4 tbsp. cornstarch
    1 1/4 c. boiling water
    Pinch of salt
    1 tbsp. butter
    1 tsp. vanilla

Mix sugar, cocoa, and cornstarch in saucepan. Add water and salt. Cook on high heat until thick. Remove form heat and add butter and vanilla; stir well. Cool. Cover top of frosting with Saran Wrap or wax paper while cooling to prevent skin. Makes enough for a large sheet or 2 layer cake.

  • Sorry, I don't make homemade frosting, last time I did that, it turned out like concrete.

  • Sure! In the older days women used to cook their frostings and they are very smooth, satiny and rich! Look up the recipes on google you'll find a bunch! Have fun!

  • If you want to make a peanut butter frosting, add it to the above, it will make a chocolate PB frosting.
