Does anyone have a true free checking account?

I am so done with Bank of America. Do you have one that doesn't require direct deposit, or a minimum balance, or any other thing they will charge you for if you don't have? With what bank?

  • A credit union will be your best bet. Are there any near you that you qualify for membership for?

  • We are with USAA. This is a private bank and is for all military familes.
They even give you back any debit/ATM charges that other banks charge. Love Them

  • I bank with Suntrust. No minimum balance, no direct deposit requirement, unlimited check writing, unlimited use of a free debit card (ok, unlimited within the bounds of my No fees if I use their ATM. The only fee I would ever have, right now anyway, is if I bounced a check. I have free online banking, free online bill pay. I really love Suntrust, and am much happier with them than with any other bank I ever used.

  • We bank with Military BOA and never had to maintain a minimum balance or use direct deposit, although it was easier for us to do so.
When we opened our savings account the only stipulation was that we had to deposit $25 minimum each month so we arranged for $25 each military payday to be transferred from our checking into our savings.
We love our Military BOA - they treat us very well!

  • I agree with a credit union. Mine has a minimum balance ($5) but it also pays interest on the checking account. However, if you want a bank I like TCF they had free checking and office hours on Saturday and Sunday. We have National City currently (moved to far from TCF branches) and they are free too. Oh and they have reward points for using checks & debit cards & your check card. We saved up so many points we paid for half of our christmas gifts with them.
